I haven't read Breakfast of Champions, but I love Slaughterhouse 5. Interesting to think of the relation between anti-fiction like this and the sort of 'well-made' (etc) novels it sends up. Is meta-fiction purely reactionary, or is it the only way left to write after the likes of Joyce, Beckett, Robbe-Grillet etc? (And also interesting to note, as you do, that some of the earliest novels had distinctly postmodern qualities, before they even had realism to bounce off). <br /><br />And yes, I suppose my critique of Freedom was a bit scathing!
